Whether the two titles Zynga have in the development oven will be similar really isn’t known at this point – but we’ll be one will be a cutsey gacha-style RPG.

Zynga Star Wars

This news follows the recent announcement of a partnership between Zynga and Disney, with the former now having exclusive rights to create and release games based on Stars Wars for mobile devices.

Another element of this news is that Zynga will handle ongoing development for the aforementioned Star Wars: Commander.

In fact we might get clues on what plans there are for Star Wars on mobile via updates for that very game. Which you can download on the App Store and Google Play right now, if you’d like.

The auto-runner didn’t begin life on mobile devices, but since touchscreen gaming has risen to prominence, tablets and smartphones have established themselves as the definitive platforms for them.

Although some consider these games to be watered-down platformers, auto-runners have evolved in many ways since becoming a genre in their own right. Many developers have put their own stamp on this concept, applying it to shooters, puzzlers and other categories with great results.

One thing is for sure, the auto-runner is an idea that has legs and more of them are sure to race onto the app stores in the future. In the meantime, though, here’s our top 10 that you can download right now.

10. Canabalt

Kittehface Software

Publisher: Kittehface Software

Available On: iOS, Android

Canabalt is to auto-runners what Doom is to the FPS. This was the spark that lit the genre’s powderkeg and paved the way for countless imitators, not to mention innovators who have built on the concept.

Featuring retro-style noir visuals and a thumping soundtrack, the game casts players as an unnamed man fleeing at pace from an unknown threat across the rooftops of a procedurally-generated cityscape.

Sometimes the best games spring up from the simplest of ideas, and this was one of those occasions. Canabalt will make you wonder how a game that uses just one virtual button can possibly be so intense.

9. Vector 2

Nekki

Publisher: Nekki

Available On: iOSAndroid

Countless auto-runners have followed in the footsteps of Canabalt and legged it onto mobile, but Vector 2 is a cut above most of the competition. Nekki’s dystopian sequel puts is own spin on the concept by adding parkour and dark, science fiction-themed backdrops to the mix.

The action is fast-paced and dynamic and offers more substance than many were expecting. Moreover, the stages are procedurally-generated, just like Canabalt’s, to keep the sense of deja vu at bay.

8. Jetpack Joyride

Halfbrick Studios

Publisher: Halfbrick Studios

Available On: iOS, Android

Jetpack Joyride took Canabalt’s blueprint, strapped a jetpack onto it and blasted it to infinity and beyond. You’ll race through a lab, swerving missiles and high-fiving scientists as you go, and eventually find yourself riding on the back of a mechanical dragon and a bird that craps coins.

The game is as bonkers as it sounds, and it deserves plaudits for expanding on the auto-runner concept in meaningful ways. Many of these games are limited in terms of content but developer Halfbrick Studios added variety to its procedurally-generated backdrops and begged repeat play-throughs by setting the player all kinds of challenges to complete.

7. Spider-Man Unlimited

Gameloft

Publisher: Gameloft

Available On: iOSAndroid

When Gameloft landed the rights to Spider-Man, the studio merged the Marvel Comics property with Temple Run-style gameplay to create a story-driven auto-runner where you can do whatever a spider can via a series of screen swipes. If you’ve played Temple Run, you’ll know exactly what to expect, but this is a robust runner in its own right and the storyline will hit all of the right notes with the Marvel diehards.

6. Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom

Sega

Publisher: Sega

Available On: iOS, Android

Virtually every platforming icon from yesteryear has been given the chance to head up their own auto-runner, so it was only ever going to be a matter of time before Sega’s speedy mascot Sonic starred in one.

As a matter of fact, he’s appeared in more than one, and his hit sequel Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom has proven a worthy addition to the genre. This is a competent 3D runner with plenty of content, and the best thing about it is the way it evokes fond memories of Sonic 2’s bonus stages.

5. Rayman Jungle Run

Ubisoft

Publisher: Ubisoft

Available On: iOSAndroid

Another platforming icon who has made the jump to the auto-runner genre is Ubisoft’s Rayman. With its gorgeous cartoon visuals and increasingly-sophisticated gameplay, Rayman Jungle Run has as much depth as some of the flagship side-scrollers found on home consoles.

Whether you’re leaping, floating or soaring your way across its colourful backdrops, Rayman Jungle Run is never less than a carnival of platforming fun, and the way it drip-feeds new abilities and challenges throughout will keep you hooked. Give it a whirl. If it strikes a chord, there’s plenty more Rayman on the app stores to sink your teeth into, with Fiesta Run and Adventures offering more of the same.

4. Pac-Man 256

Publisher: Bandai-Namco

Available On: iOS, Android

There have been times when glitches have resulted in the creation of entire video games, and titles like Pac-Man 256 make you thankful for this anomaly. Developers Hipster Whale and 3 Sprockets created a standalone offering around the infamous glitch which caused the original maze-running classic to glitch out when the player reached level 256.

The concept alone is ingenious, but the way the studios spliced the Pac-Man formula with traditional auto-runner elements is what makes this such a great fit for tablets and smartphones. Here we have living proof that you can teach an old gaming icon a few new tricks.

3. Alto’s Adventure

Publisher: Noodlecake Studios

Available On: iOSAndroid

It would be more appropriate to dub Alto’s Adventure an auto-skier, rather than an auto-runner, and it’s just as accurate to call it a definitive take on the genre. You won’t find many runners as polished as this.

The core gameplay comes to life thanks to the addition of stunts and other challenges, which expand the formula by ensuring that Alto’s Adventure is about more than just covering as much distance as possible.

2. Into The Dead 2

Publisher: PikPok

Available On: iOSAndroid

Into the Dead 2 is the perfect example of a sequel that builds on the original’s framework and improves everything about it. While the previous game was an addictive zombie auto-runner with FPS mechanics, the second instalment is all of that and so much more.

Developer PikPok has thrown a fully-fledged campaign mode into the mix, with an engaging story, tonnes of weapons to wield and upgrade, and multiple endings for added replay value. Meanwhile, those who prefer racing through an endless zombie apocalypse without the missing daughter in peril can do just that in the daily challenges and events.

1. Super Mario Run

Nintendo

Publisher: Nintendo

Available On: iOSAndroid

Mario on mobile! What a time to be alive! When Nintendo brought its dungaree-clad mascot to mobile devices, it took many of the concepts from his more recent 2D adventures and repackaged them for smartphones. This was done by reverse engineering Super Mario Bros as an auto-runner, but it lost none of its magic along the way.

Although it can be played one-handed, Super Mario Run feels like something close to the full-fat Mario experience. The graphics look beautifully polished and the gameplay flows nicely. The only real difference is that you can’t backtrack, though Nintendo has thrown in extra features to compensate for the necessary streamlining.

Toad Rally, in which players race against the ghosts of other users online, and the chance to build your own mini Mushroom Kingdom outside of the mainline campaign add stacks of longevity, and there’s bound to be further content updates in the plumber’s pipeline.

Role-playing games (RPGs) come in many forms, and have done since the Dungeons & Dragons formula found its way from tabletops in parents’ basements across the world to early home computers.

From sword-and-sorcery classics to post-apocalyptic adventures, RPGs have evolved so much since then and many have found a happy home on mobile devices. Here’s our top 10 on iOS and Android.

10. Wayward Souls

Publisher: Noodlecake Studios

Available On: iOS, Android

Wayward Souls is an action-adventure that learned everything it knows about combat from the Zelda series. You’ll hack and slash your way through procedurally-generated dungeons, levelling up your hero along the way, all while feasting your eyes on pleasingly-nostalgic visuals.

9. Dungen Hunter 5

Publisher: Gameloft

Available On: iOS, Android

Dungeon Hunter 5 is a game that can claim to have pulled off everything it set out to achieve: bringing the full Diablo experience (or as close as we were ever going to get to it) to mobile. Gameloft’s hack-and-slasher is beautifully polished and crammed with content. There are more than 900 weapons to wield and hundreds of skills and spells to learn!

8. Cat Quest

Publisher: The Gentlebros

Available On: iOS, Android

Don’t let the cutesy sprites and twee title fool you, this kitty has claws! Cat Quest may be fun and lighthearted, but it’s a fully-fledged action-RPG, boiled down to its essence. Dungeon crawl, dragons slay and loot to your heart’s content. This one really is the cat’s whiskers.

7. Crashlands

Publisher: Butterscotch Shenanigans

Available On: iOS, Android

In Crashlands, players find themselves stranded on a hostile alien world and the only way to survive is to defeat the local wildlife and craft bases from their remains. It might sound morbid, but you’ll be too busy laughing at the witty dialogue and repairing your ship to notice.

6. Banner Saga 2

Versus Evil

Publisher: Versus Evil

Available On: iOS, Android

If Cat Quest and other titles of its ilk are too twee for your tastes, Banner Saga 2 might just be the role-playing game for you. This Viking-themed adventure is full of darkness, grit and weighty moral decisions. Out there on the battlefield, RPG elements collide with in-depth strategy mechanics and the results are always engrossing.

5. Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition

Square Enix

Publisher: Square Enix

Available On: iOS, Android

Nobody can accuse Square Enix of neglecting Final Fantasy fans on mobile. Not only has the Japanese studio brought most of the early entries in the legendary RPG series to iOS and Android, it has also rebuilt Final Fantasy XV for mobile devices, from the ground up with a new cartoony aesthetic and an interface tailored for touchscreens.

The chance to revisit the console smash’s world from a fresh, colourful perspective is one that fans of the franchise should not pass up. Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition’s first episode is free to download and sample, if you need another reason to drop what you’re doing give it a whirl.

4. Chrono Trigger

Square Enix

Publisher: Square Enix

Available On: Android, iOS

Square Enix is the undisputed king of the JRPG and that was certainly the case in the 16-bit era when it was churning out classics like Chrono Trigger. The SNES smash differentiated itself from the early Final Fantasys with a time-bending story and high science fiction elements.

Although the definitive way to experience Chrono Trigger is with an old-school Nintendo controller in hand, the essence of the game found its way to iOS and Android devices intact. The twist-filled story is its lifeblood and the key ingredient that makes it timeless.

3. Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition

Beamdog

Publisher: Beamdog

Available On: iOSAndroid

Baldur’s Gate is one of the greatest games to come out of the role-playing renaissance on home computers during the late 1990s. It shares DNA with the original tabletop edition of Dungeons & Dragons and the early games it inspired, and remains an undisputed RPG classic.

This vintage fantasy adventure charts the player’s journey from the castle in which they were born to the sprawling, wartorn plains of a medieval-style realm. You’ll craft weapons, armour and potions, crawl dungeons, slay fantastical beasts and level up your hero along the way.

2. Final Fantasy VII

Square Enix

Publisher: Square Enix

Available On: iOS, Android

No doubt you’re already aware that Final Fantasy VII is the stuff of legends, a genre-redefining RPG that introduced a new generation of fans to turn-based combat when it debuted on PlayStation in the 1990s.

So, the burning question is how does it fare on touchscreen hardware? Well, this is largely the original game ported to tablets and smartphones with its essence unchanged but there’s no escaping the fact it wasn’t built for mobile. The virtual button setup demands serious display real estate but Final Fantasy VII in this form is far from unplayable, and there’s a real novelty about having one of the best games from yesteryear on a device that fits into your pocket.

1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Publisher: Aspyr Media

Available On: iOS, Android

Build your own Lightsaber, learn the ways of the Force or shun it in favour of joining the Dark Side. You can do all of these things and more in Knights of the Old Republic, the 2003 roleplaying game which delivered the definitive Star War experience.

Ktrulyas truely epic in its day, the action spanning nine planets from a galaxy far, far away, and it arrived on mobile with no concessions. The Force is as strong as ever in this one.

Point-and-click adventures once ruled the PC gaming roost, and they captured the imaginations of an entire generation of players by shifting the focus away from action and reflex-based challenges towards narrative, characterisation and creative problem-solving.

These titles took fans from pirate-infested seas in the Caribbean to those sectors of deep space where nobody can hear you clean, until their market share all-but vanished when a new age of 3D gaming dawned.

But thanks to the rise of touchscreen gaming on mobile, point-and-click adventures have enjoyed a resurgence of sorts, and here are the best ones which have sprung up on iOS and Android over the years.

10. Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded

Replay Games

Publisher: Replay Games

Available On: iOS, Android

Leisure Suit Larry may be the product of a bygone age but its 2013 remake for mobile devices isn’t as shallow as its subject matter suggests. Larry fans (if they still exist) will be treated to some decent puzzles, the occasional gag that doesn’t tank, and die in all kinds of entertaining ways. While the game’s core themes may not have aged well, Reloaded improves on the original in every possible way.

9. Gabriel Knight: The Sins of the Fathers

Phoenix Online Studios

Publisher: Phoenix Online Studios

Available On: iOS, Android

Like Larry Laffer, Roger Wilco and King Graham, Gabriel Knight is a graduate of the Sierra Online school of point-and-click adventures. His critically-acclaimed first outing, The Sins of the Fathers, received the special edition treatment to mark its 20th anniversary in 2013 and this revamped version found its way to iOS and Android devices.

Players will be thrust into a compelling voodoo murder-mystery set in the heart of New Orleans. The characters are as layered as some of the game’s most challenging puzzles and the enhanced visuals, created from the ground up, are merely the icing on this re-baked cake.

8. Gemini Rue

Wadjet Eye Games

Publisher: Wadjet Eye Games

Available On: iOS, Android

A gritty noir thriller set against a Blade Runner-esque backdrop, Gemini Rue may look like a pixelated classic from yesteryear but it actually debuted in 2011. The retro visuals are a great fit for the game’s themes and tone, and the complex, double-pronged narrative is gripping.

Gemini Rue isn’t just about the head-scratching puzzles, engaging storyline and complex characters, developer Wadjet Eye Games has also weaved shooting segments seamlessly into the mix, giving the game an action-based edge over many of its competitors.

7. Machinarium

Publisher: Amantia Design

Available On: iOS, Android

Narrative is often as important as puzzles in adventure games, so creating one that works without dialogue is quite the feat. Machinarium delivers an absorbing, puzzle-centric experience without sacrificing personality along with its robotic protagonists’ vocals.

Machinarium is a change of pace from most of the other games on this list. Taking control of a pint-sized robot named Josef, the object is to simply puzzle your way from one end of the screen to other, but that isn’t to say it’s lacking in challenge, substance or charm.

6. A Normal Lost Phone

Publisher: Plug in Digital

Available On: iOS, Android

Discovering a misplaced phone isn’t much of a setup compared to a voodoo mystery or a fight for freedom in a dystopian future, but A Normal Lost Phone delivers narrative bang for your buck in the long run.

As you hack your way through the phone’s apps and read through its messages, a fascinating mystery about the handset owner’s identity begins to unfold, one which forces the players to tackle moral dilemmas and ponder questions about social acceptance along the way.

5. The Walking Dead

Publisher: Telltale Games

Available On: iOS, Android

In some ways, Telltale’s adventure games are a far cry from the point-and-click classics that were once the lifeblood of Sierra and LucasArts. Its episodic Walking Dead series, for instance, emphasises quicktime action over item-based puzzles, though it shares DNA with the genre greats.

Telltale’s The Walking Dead featured on several ‘game of the year’ lists when the first season debuted in 2012, and with good reason. These games are some of the most emotive you’ll ever play. They’re packed with characterisation and the storytelling is masterful. Fans of the comics will appreciate its dedication to recapturing the original art style, but this is a tale all gamers should experience at least once.

4. Thimbleweed Park

Publisher: Terrible Toybox

Available On: iOS, Android

If you’re nostalgic for the days of the early LucasArts adventures, with their verb tables and VGA graphics, Thimbleweed Park is just the game for you. From the imagination of The Secret of Monkey Island developer Ron Gilbert comes a surreal murder-mystery that plays out from the perspective of two X-Files-lampooning secret agents, a foul-mouthed clown and various other weird and wonderful characters.

Gilbert captured everything that made Monkey Island a timeless classic in a bottle and cracked it open when he put Thimbleweed Park together.

3. Day of the Tentacle Remastered

Available On: iOS

Mad scientists, portaloos that double as time machines and mutant tentacles with world domination plans: Day of the Tentacle was madcap in the best possible ways.

This is a true LucasArts great; pure point-and-click gold that shows the genre at its best. It’s a sequel to an earlier LucasArts effort, Maniac Mansion, but only in the sense that the iPhone X is a sequel to Alexander Graham Bell’s original telephone.

Day of the Tentacle improved on its predecessor in every way and crams in all of the essential adventure ingredients: memorable characters, creative puzzles, a strong story and a barrelful of humour. The only downside? Android mobile devices were left out in the cold when the remastered edition came out.

2. Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars – Director’s Cut

Revolution Software

Publisher: Revolution Software

Available On: iOS, Android

The Broken Sword series made a name for itself in the ’90s with its blend of real history and dramatic storytelling. Kind like the work of Dan Brown, except, um… good.

George Stobbart’s debut outing is an adventure-gaming milestone, lauded for its plot, graphics, orchestra score and puzzles. None of those things had lost their shine when the director’s cut came along in 2009, and the extended scenes and new artwork from Watchman illustrator Dave Gibbons only enriched the experience.

1. Grim Fandango

Publisher: Double Fine Productions

Available On: iOS, Android

The latest Pixar movie, Coco, was hailed for introducing viewers to Mexican folklore and exploring how the deceased are revered and celebrated in this culture. Well, LucasArts did that a generation earlier when it released Grim Fandango, as any self-respecting point-and-click fan will tell you.

Grim Fandango is a noir-style mystery set in the Land of the Dead, where its skeleton protagonist Manny Calavera works as a travel agent charged with guiding souls to their eternal rest. The story kicks off when he stumbles upon a conspiracy to cheat a virtuous soul of out the afterlife they deserve.

The game was released in 1998, towards the tail end of the golden age of point-and-click adventures, but it proved that LucasArts was still coming out with fresh ideas for the genre at this point. The use of 3D character models against static backdrops made Grim Fandango an evolutionary title, and it’s chock full of the same magic which made Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle timeless classics.

Mobile puzzle games have been around since the age when Nokia bricks were the iPhones of their day. Who doesn’t have memories of playing Snake in the back of a uni lecture hall, or on a bus to work?

Today, puzzlers on iOS and Android come in all shapes and sizes and many of the best ones are just as addictive as Snake. Here’s our top 10…

10. Angry Birds Space

Rovio

Publisher: Rovio

Available On: iOS, Android

The Angry Birds are no longer the dominant force they once were. Rovio’s irate aviaries once had a permanent nest at the top of the app store charts but they’ve since been knocked off their perch by other mobile franchises. The word ‘fad’ is bandied about a lot in conversations about the series, but the core concept of slinging birds at pigs, towers and pig-filled towers is still fun today, especially if you haven’t done it for a while.

Angry Birds Space was a high point for the series, as the introduction of zero-gravity elements expanded the formula in meaningful ways. Rovio went to great lengths to research how these physics might effect colliding spheres, and the results were fun and authentic in equal measure.

9. realMyst

Noodlecake Studios

Publisher: Noodlecake Studios

Available On: iOS, Android

Myst was a showcase title that ushered PC gaming into the CD-ROM age, and if it passed you by in the early ’90s, this mobile port will help you understand what all the fuss was about. The game, which tasks players with escaping from a puzzle-filled island, was a graphical trailblazer in its heyday and it’s easy to see why. Not only does realMyst recreate the original’s environments, its remastered visuals gives them a facelift.

8. Lara Croft GO

Publisher: Square Enix

Available On: iOS, Android

Square Enix Montreal scaled down the Tomb Raider formula and repackaged it as a tabletop puzzler with Lara Croft GO. You’ll chuck spears at snakes, push blocks onto switches and, of course, raid tombs. The developer successfully retained the essence of the iconic series when reimagining it for a new genre, and the results were equally brilliant when it gave Hitman and Deus Ex the same treatment.

7. Linelight

My Dog Zorro

Publisher: My Dog Zorro

Available On: iOS, Android

Linelight is one of the most relaxing mobile games you’ll ever play. From its tranquil music to the gentle glow of its minimalist visuals, this is the only app you need to soothe your troubled mind. While it’s a laidback experience, the game is also capable of giving you a mental workout. The object is to simply guide a beam of light from one end of the screen to another, but this basic task becomes increasingly complex as you play, with traps, enemies and head-scratching puzzles drip-fed throughout.

6. Death Squared

Death Squared

Publisher: SMG Studio

Available On: iOS, Android

Most mobile puzzlers are solitary affairs designed to take the sting out of a commute or waiting room stay, so how about one you can play with friends? Death Squared is a charming multiplayer puzzler that’s all about coordination, cooperation and robot explosions.

5. Tavern Guardians

Wombo Test

Publisher: Wombo Test

Available On: iOS

The App Store is chock full of match-three puzzles, so it’s always refreshing when one comes along and puts a twist on the concept. Tavern Guardians does that by incorporating strategy elements into the mix. Tactical unit placement is just as important as matching those icons up when it comes to defeating the forces of evil.

4. Marvel Puzzle Quest

Publisher: Demiurge Studios

Available On: iOSAndroid

Here’s another match-three puzzler with a twist. Marvel Puzzle Quest is basically Bejeweled with RPG elements, Marvel Comics characters and a hokey storyline about a meteor strike introducing a darkly mysterious chemical substance to our planet.

Gameplay-wise, it rarely deviates from the Bejeweled template, but that’s okay since the Popcap classic was once the benchmark for the genre. Meanwhile, the hand-drawn depictions of classic comic characters are impressive enough to earn the game bonus points from the Marvelites.

3. World of Goo

2D Boy

Publisher: 2D Boy

Available On: iOS, Android

In World of Goo, players will find themselves stretching sentient balls of gunk into towers and bridges so other balls of gunk can gain safe passage to the end of the level. It sounds utterly bizarre on paper, but it’s actually one of the best and most charming puzzle titles on the app stores. World of Goo hit home consoles first, though the mobile edition is definitive, as the touchscreen controls create the illusion that you’re reaching into the world and manipulating it with your hands.

2. The Room: Old Sins

The Room: Old Sins

Publisher: Fireproof Games

Available On: iOS, Android

Tactile exploration meets compelling puzzles and an arcane narrative in The Room: Old Sins, the fourth instalment in Fireproof Games’ award-winning hidden-object series. Like its predecessors, Old Sins boasts gorgeous visuals, challenging conundrums and an interface that has been finely-tuned for tablets and smartphones. Download any instalment in The Room series and you won’t be disappointed, but Old Sins marks a high point for the franchise.

1. Monument Valley 2

Ustwo Games

Publisher: Ustwo Games

Available On: iOS, Android

Indie smash Monument Valley turned the mobile world upside down when it debuted in 2014 and its incredible sequel had much the same effect. The games are based around ingenious, MC Escher-inspired puzzles that require players to twist and turn portions of the level to progress. Throw in some stylish visuals and we have a pair of whimsical puzzle classics.
