Just in case you haven’t had enough fun trying to complete the Special Research tasks in Pokemon GO, the developers at Niantic have delivered a new one for the Halloween season. Entitled ‘A Spooky Message,’ it leads to an encounter with Spiritomb, a Ghost and Dark-type Pokemon who is not a mythical Pokemon like in other Special Research chains but is still pretty cool nonetheless.

The bad news about A Spooky Message is that it’s time-limited, but the good news is that there are far fewer groups of tasks to complete — just three, in fact. Here’s what you need to do to get through all three sets of tasks and the rewards you’ll get when you do.

A Spooky Message Step 1/3

Pokemon GO

Tasks:

  • Catch 10 Ghost-type Pokemon
  • Make 8 Great Throws
  • Use 108 Berries to help catch Pokemon

The first part of this step is pretty self-explanatory, and much easier at the moment since Ghost-type Pokemon are spawning at much higher rates. Halloween, remember?

Making Great Throws is all up to you, but it can actually work together with the final task if you run into Pokemon who aren’t that easy to catch. Why? Well, you might get a chance for several Great Throws in one encounter if a Pokemon escapes your Pokeballs a few times, and each berry you use along the way also will count toward the 108 total too. So if it takes, say, four Razz Berries to capture a single Pokemon, all four will count toward the total.

Bonus fact: GameRant has a fun explanation of why the number 108 is part of this step.

Rewards:

  • 10 Pokeballs
  • 1080 Stardust
  • 8 Silver Pinap Berries

A Spooky Message Step 2/3

Tasks:

  • Catch 10 Dark-type Pokemon
  • Spin 8 PokeStops you haven’t visited before
  • Catch 108 Pokemon

Go west, young man. Or north, south or east, and it doesn’t matter if you’re young or a man. The point is that you’ll have to travel a bit to handle this set of tasks, and ironically, the more you’ve played Pokemon GO in places away from home, the more difficult it will be to find eight PokeStops that are new to you. Funny how that works.

Fortunately, the other two parts of this step are easier. Dark-type Pokemon are also more abundant around Halloween, and catching 108 Pokemon is simply a matter of playing often. No big wrinkles there.

Rewards:

  • 10 Pokeballs
  • 1080 Stardust
  • 8 Silver Pinap Berries

Yes, this is the exact same set of rewards from the first step, but that’s okay because it’s worth it for the final step.

A Spooky Message Step 3/3

Task:

  • Catch Spiritomb

This might not be your last task, depending on how you approach the three tasks in the previous step, Spiritomb will appear as a special encounter once you catch 108 Pokemon, but that’s likely to take you the longest time anyway.

Rewards:

  • 18 Spiritomb candy
  • 1080 Stardust
  • 3,240 XP

That’s not a bad haul for your trouble, especially when you consider how much less overall work this particular Special Research chain is. The Spiritomb candy can be used in conjunction with the Stardust right away, which is why you’ll probably notice some fairly powerful Spiritombs out guarding gyms in your neck of the wood during and immediately after this event.

It’s not always easy to identify the “best” characters in any kind of RPG. There are a lot of different factors that go into each different game, not to mention different modes within those games, not to mention … well, you get the picture. Best is a moving target, and in Dragalia Lost, it’s almost like two separate targets since you have to consider both your adventurers (characters) and the dragons into which they transform.

Happily, someone playing some RPG in the past invented something called a tier list — seriously, we have no idea who came up with the first one, so Reddit, holler if you know — which is a quick way to separate the heroes from the zeroes. Or at least the SS from the C, which is just as useful.

Here’s the thing about a tier list, though: It’s simply opinion, though usually of the educated variety since it is ideally based on what you and other Dragalia Lost players have experienced over time. To put together ours, we consulted both the Dragalia Lost wiki on Gamepedia and IGN to get their views, then filtered them through our own.

Also, it’s important to remember that the element system in Dragalia Lost is very strong, and that optimizing by element is a really good idea for certain quests. So perhaps even more than many other RPGs, it’s best to use the tier lists as guides and not bibles, because there are absolutely certain levels for which it makes sense to simply use the four best heroes from one element.

Of course, this list can still help for those comparisons, so let’s dive into the adventurers first.

Dragalia Lost Adventurers Tier List

  • Ezelith: Genius of the Century (5*, fire)
  • Hawk: Twilight Hunter (5*, wind)
  • Hildegarde: Devout Oracle (5*, light)

  • Mikoto: Nature’s Avatar (5*, fire)
  • Xander: Born Ruler (5*, water)

  • Celliera: Hot-Blooded Instructor (4*, water)
  • Cleo: Belle Healer (4*, shadow)
  • Eleonora: Curious Archer (4*, wind)
  • Elisanne: Vampaladyn (5*, light)
  • Musashi: Wandering Samurai (4*, wind)
  • Orion: Maiden Protector (4*, shadow)
  • Ryozen: Dormant Demon (4*, light)

  • Kleimann: Mad Scientist (4*, shadow)
  • Luther: Passionate Dancer (4*, water)
  • Orsem: Dreamer on Ice (4*, water)

Any adventurer you don’t see on the list can be considered C tier.

Dragalia Lost Dragons Tier List

SS

  • Agni (5*, fire)
  • Leviathan (5*, water)
  • Phoenix (4*, fire)
  • Zephyr (5*, wind)

S

  • Jeanne d’Arc (5*, light)
  • Nidhogg (5*, dark)

  • Unicorn (4*, light)
  • Vodyanoy (4*, water)
  • Zodiark (4*, shadow)

Any dragons not found in one of the above groups can be considered C tier, including all 3-star dragons.

Hopefully you’ll find this tier list useful and at least use it as the framework for your own. We’ve also got more Dragalia Lost guides that can help, including our general tips and hints plus advice on how to get free Wyrmite.

I’ve got some bad news for you: When you’re playing Candy Crush Friends Saga, you’re eventually going to fail. In fact you’re going to hit levels where you fail repeatedly, dying multiple times before you eventually get it figured out. And in the process, you’re going to run out of lives, because you can only have five of them at a time, as you probably have already guessed.

However, in King’s other Saga games, of which the original Candy Crush Saga remains, well, the king, having a lot of friends to send you lives was of the utmost importance because you could ask them to send you free lives and manage them to always have five on hand if necessary. Candy Crush Friends Saga works a little differently.

The most important difference is that if you have full lives, you can’t even ask your friends for help. You need to be down at least one life before you can do anything at all. But the big deal is that you can’t “store” lives to refill when you want. Here’s how the game’s own help section describes it:

If your friend sends you multiple sets of lives then you will only see one set in the queue, once they have been accepted then you will be able to receive any more requests which are then re-sent.

If you run out of lives, you will have the chance to ask your friends to help you, or you can use the lives that have already been received.

That might sound confusing for now, but it will make more sense once you’ve been playing Candy Crush Friends Saga for a bit.

How to Get Free Lives From Friends

Candy Crush Friends Saga

When you are in need of lives, here’s what you need to do.

  1. Tap on the lives icon in the upper-left corner of the main screen, which should have a number less than five (remember?) and a countdown timer until you would earn your next life naturally.
  2. A screen will pop up with an even bigger countdown timer and a message for you to, “Ask your friends for more lives.” Tap the ‘Ask friends’ button.
  3. A list of all your in-game friends will pop up, and you can toggle them to your heart’s content by checking or unchecking the boxes next to their names. Once you’re ready, tap the ‘Ask friends’ button again.

You’ll also want to tap the heart meter to find out if your friends have actually helped you and sent some, because you claim them there as well.

Does the Unlimited Lives Trick Work on Candy Crush Friends Saga?

What, you expect us to mess around with the clock on our phone just for you? Well, we suppose so, seeing as we’re pals and all …

What we’re talking about is this old favorite for Candy Crush Saga, where you could trick your mobile device into thinking the timer had run down and refilled your lives. So does it work for Candy Crush Friends Saga?

Yep, it sure seems to. You can definitely trick your phone or tablet by turning off the automatic date/time setting feature and then fast forwarding however long is necessary to refill your lives. At least you can right now. Maybe King will do something to prevent it at some point, or perhaps they just figure if you’re willing to play with fire by risking forgetting to restore your device to the proper time, that’s on you.

In any case, please tell us how it is in the future, as we’d love to know.

We’ve also got general Candy Crush Friends Saga tips and hints if you need more. Now go and live your best lives, five at a time.

It’s cleaning time in Pokemon GO. Not a physical cleaning, mind you, as that would be an unusual type of in-game event, to say the least. We’re talking about the kind of digital housecleaning that the developers go through to prepare for a big new content release, which is exactly what fans expect when Gen 4 Pokemon hit the game soon.

(When, exactly? Niantic hasn’t revealed that information just yet, but the best guess is that the new Pokemon are coming before the end of October.)

To get ready for new characters, the devs have taken a hard look at the stats for the hundreds of Pokemon already in the game. As the always intrepid people at The Sliph Road have discovered, almost every character in Pokemon GO has been part of a massive rebalancing that has led to lower Defense stat values for the majority of Pokemon, along with buffs in other areas. The end result is that some of the best defenders have been nerfed a bit, though they should still be good for defending gyms even if they are slightly less effective.

In all, 13 Pokemon have been nerfed, meaning their CP values will drop once the rebalancing changes, which have been temporarily rolled back at the time of this article, are put back in the game. Here’s a quick look at who’s been hit the hardest in the relative order of how much the nerf affects them.

Pokemon Whose CP Values Will Drop

  • Blissey
  • Chansey
  • Snorlax
  • Rhydon
  • Slaking
  • Vaporeon
  • Relicanth
  • Rhyhorn
  • Ho-Oh
  • Steelix
  • Noctowl
  • Donphan
  • Aggron

Note that at the bottom of the list, the reduction in CP should be very minor, where the effects on the likes of Blissey, Chansey and Snorlax will be more profound.

That means every other character in Pokemon GO has been buffed in terms of overall CP, though in most cases their defense stats will still see a reduction (about 75 percent of Pokemon will see defense nerfs). We’re obviously not going to list all 300-plus Pokemon to be buffed, but here’s a list of the top 25 beneficiaries of CP buffs.

Top Pokemon Whose CP Values Will Rise

  • Deoxys
  • Shedinja
  • Alolan Dugtrio
  • Starmie
  • Magnemite
  • Gengar
  • Dusclops
  • Hitmontop
  • Magneton
  • Haunter
  • Absol
  • Mr. Mime
  • Scyther
  • Hitmonchan
  • Staryu
  • Gastly
  • Banette
  • Dugtrio
  • Dodrio
  • Alolan Diglett
  • Breloom
  • Anorith
  • Kingdra
  • Blaziken
  • Salamence

When will the changes be reinstated? We don’t know for sure, but depending on when you read this article, it may have already taken place. The idea is to level the playing field a bit to make sure that everything is perfectly balanced (h/t Thanos for that phrasing) for when the Gen 4 Pokemon arrive. While not all of them will enter Pokemon GO at the same time, we’re talking about 107 new pocket monsters when it’s all said and done.

Again, the CP changes don’t mean that workhorses like Blissey and Snorlax won’t still be great gym defenders. They just won’t be quite as superior compared to some other options, and that should be a good thing in the long run.

Just when you thought you’d crushed all the candy you’d ever want to crush, King pops out with a Stone Cold Steve Austin-esque “Eh eh!” Candy Crush Friends Saga is set to pick up right where the original left off, which means a ton of match-3 levels (more than 380 to start) and colorful characters you’ll soon grow to either love or reluctantly accept as part of the overall package.

You shouldn’t overlook those characters, though. The inhabitants of the world of Candy Crush Friends Saga actually have an important role to play, as they have unique special abilities that activate when you match a certain number of one kind of symbol, allowing you to more easily clear a level. Choosing between them, as you’ll be able to do as soon as you unlock more than one, can be the key to being able to get past a particularly challenging board.

There’s plenty more to discuss when it comes to Candy Crush Friends Saga, so let’s do that right now, with our guide to all the tips and tricks you’ll need to get ahead of your friends right away.

Know Your Goal for Each Level

Candy Crush Friends Saga only gives you a certain number of matches to clear each level, and the less moves you make, the higher your score. Having moves left over is the best way to rack up a score high enough to earn three stars.

However, your actual objective in each level can be different, and it’s important to keep it in mind. Here are a few you’ll encounter along the way:

  • Free the Octopuses – We still think it should be octopi, but whatevs. The eight-armed sea creatures are stuck under the board, sometimes under multiple levels of obstructions, and you’ve got to make matches next to them to set them free.
  • Find the Animals – A number of animals are buried under ice tiles, which you can crack by making matches on top of them.
  • Spread the Jam – Cover as many squares of the playing field as possible with delicious jam, which you can pretend is any flavor you want.
  • Dunk the Cookies – Make matches that move the cookies around until they fall into the chocolate below the board.
  • Collect the Hearts – Fill the heart-shaped box molds until you have enough hearts to pass the level.

Bonus tip: A counter in the upper-left corner of the screen is tracking your progress toward your goal, so make sure to keep an eye on it.

Choose Your Friend Carefully

Candy Crush Friends Saga

We’re not absolutely sure if the 3D characters in the game are the “Friends” referred to in the title, but we’re assuming that’s the case until told otherwise. You’ll learn quickly that every character has his or her own special power-up symbol that gets added to the board once you’ve made enough matches of a particular kind of candy. Tiffi, for instance, will throw Swedish fish onto the board once you’ve matched 10 jelly beans. Swedish fish, in turn, will swim right toward your objective and directly help you pass a level.

Other characters have their own special candies, and some may be more useful in a particular level. You can pick which character you want to help you before you start any level, and the game will recommend one, so it pays to take heed, especially if you’ve never played that level before.

Learn About All the Power-Ups, a.k.a. Special Candies

Candy Crush Friends Saga

Just like in the first Candy Crush Saga, there are quite a few power-ups you can create by doing matches that are more than the simple three like symbols in a row. Here are the Special Candies and how to make them:

  • Striped Candy – Created by matching four candies in a row, the Striped Candy will blast either a horizontal or vertical line when you use it in a match, clearing many blockers in one go. The direction of the stripes on the candy indicate which way it will blast.
  • Swedish Fish – You can make a Swedish Fish by matching four candies in a 2×2 square. When used in a match or slammed together with another of its own kind, the Swedish Fish will swim toward blockers or candies that need to be cleared. And eat them, we guess.
  • Color Bomb – Made by matching five candies in a row, you can use the Color Bomb in a match with any kind of candy and it will get the other candies on the board of that type to explode.
  • Coloring Candy – The hardest Special Candy to create, the Coloring Candy can only be created with six like candies in a T shape. You can then match the Coloring Candy with a candy of another color to turn everything of that color on the board into the same color as the Coloring Candy. Say that five times fast!

Keep in mind that you can often set off some powerful combos by matching two of these power-ups together. Experiment and you can pretty quickly figure out your own favorite combos.

In closing, one extra tip: If you are stuck, watch the game carefully. Not only will it show you a match that can be made, the character you have as a helper will often suggest a Special Candy that can be formed based on what’s on the board. See? They really are your friends.

Dragalia Lost has many of the usual trappings of F2P mobile games, including multiple currencies and a gacha system that not only controls which characters you unlock in which order but also the dragons and Wyrmprints you can equip. Come to think of it, about the only thing it doesn’t factor into is weapons, which you find as drops. In any case, one of the currencies you’ll need is Wyrmite, which leads to summons, which leads to misery. Unless you get good stuff, and if you don’t and it’s early in the game, you can simply reroll your starting characters.

But we digress. You’d think Wyrmite would be the premium currency in Dragalia Lost because you need so much of it — 1500 for Tenfold Summons, which is really how you should be spending it, as well as for item summons — but you’d be wrong. The premium currency is actually called Diamantium, and that’s the stuff you buy with real money if that’s something you want to do.

So, huzzah! You can get your Wyrmite for free, and that’s a good thing. But how? That’s exactly what we’re here to explain. Let’s talk about the ways. All of them.

Complete Some Endeavors

Some games call them daily tasks or quests. Dragalia Lost calls them Endeavors, and even though that’s a little odd, it’s the same concept. Endeavors are goals for you to complete for a variety of rewards, most of which pay out in Wyrmite.

Dragalia Lost

There are four kinds of Endeavors:

  • Daily Endeavors – Tasks for you to check off like a to-do list, except more fun. These reset daily. Hence the name.
  • Limited Endeavors – These are only around for a limited of time. Again, they’re well named.
  • Normal Endeavors – Prefer long term goals? Congrats, you’re an organized person and we’re told that’s a good thing. You’ll probably like these since they are cumulative goals you knock out over time, along with some others that are one-time deals but you’ll need to put in some work to complete.
  • Special Endeavors – Not really so special since you have to pay to get them. You can do that in the Shop, which you can reach by tapping on the icon that looks like a store sign with a diamond on it. Once there, tap on ‘Value Packs’ and look for the Endeavor Packs. These aren’t cheap (the least costly one is $9.99 at the time of this article) but will give you the ability to earn Wyrmite and a lot more rewards while you play.

Finish Each Quest Getting All Three Fleur-de-lis Symbols

Dragalia Lost

We don’t need no stars when we have the fluer-de-lis. That’s the measuring stick for how impressively you complete any stage, which means keeping everyone in your party alive. If you do, you’ll get all three symbols filled in and get a gift of Wyrmite in your inbox. You’ll also be able to replay the level without actually playing it by using a skip ticket, which isn’t directly related to our discussion but is still useful information.

Don’t forget that this applies to not just your story quests but events as well. Play them both to earn as much Wyrmite as possible.

Play Dragalia Lost Every Day

Yep, like many other mobile games you’ve grown to know and love, you’ll get some Wyrmite just for logging in. Daily rewards are always welcome.

That may not seem like a lot of methods to earn free Wyrmite, but you’ll find yourself earning it in small amounts constantly. It’s tempting to spend it early, but stockpiling Wyrmite for limited time only events or simply for Tenfold Summons is the way to go.

One of the prime ways that F2P RPGs like Nintendo and Cygames’ Dragalia Lost get their hooks in you is to make it fairly easy to get one or two powerful starting characters. “Hey, this isn’t so bad, I’ll have four five-stars in no time,” you think to yourself, though of course that early game gravy train eventually makes its last stop and you end up having to grind pretty hard or pay money to finish off the team of your dreams, especially if the gacha gods are feeling particularly cruel.

What if you could make the odds ever in your favor, to coin a phrase that I definitely never heard in any form of pop culture ever before? There’s actually a pretty easy way to reroll the characters you have at your disposal when you first start your journey in Dragalia Lost. The best part is that it’s completely free, and you can even do it repeatedly if you so choose. That’s actually more than one part, but let’s not quibble over semantics.

The two keys to the rerolling process are the Jumpstart Endeavors, which are goals you can complete when you first start playing to get plenty of Wyrmite (one of the game’s several currencies, and key to obtaining more characters) and to not link your account to the game right away. Intrigued? We’ll lay it out step by step for you.

Dragalia Lost: Rerolling Starting Characters for Free

  1. When you start playing, be sure not to link your account. Yes, we said this already, and yes, we really mean it. If you don’t follow this advice, the rest of the rerolling process won’t work. You can always choose to link your account for playing on multiple devices later — in fact, at any time after you start.
  2. Play through the tutorial, during which time you’ll receive your first character. Four stars! Not bad, but we can do better. Though the tutorial will force you to play a few levels without being able to do anything else, it’s not many. Eventually, you’ll be able to access most of the options on the game’s main menu.
  3. Tap on the ‘More’ icon on the bottom nav menu, then the ‘Helper Settings’ button. This is where you set the character your in-game friends will get to use during battles if they decide to pick you, so it’s helpful to remember for later. Assign your first character as your helper and you’ll fulfill an achievement that will give you 2800 Wyrmite. This is a lot, as you’ll soon discover.
  4. Return to the main menu and tap on the ‘Jumpstart Endeavors’ button, which is on the left and will have a word balloon coming out of it. You can’t miss it. Then tap on the ‘Limited’ tab and collect the achievement.
  5. Close out of your achievements and tap on your mailbox icon at the top of the main screen. Tap on the ‘Accept All’ button and you’ll have more than 3000 Wyrmite. It won’t be that easy ever again. Probably. Note: If you are reading this after Oct. 10, 2018, the Jumpstart Endeavors will be over, but we expect there will be something similar replacing it that will leave you in roughly the same shape, currency-wise.
  6. Tap on the ‘Summon’ icon in the bottom nav bar. This is where you’ll be coming any time you have enough Wyrmite to do summons, which you’ll only want to do once you’ve saved up for the Tenfold Summon. That costs 1500 Wyrmite and will give you a mix of characters, dragons and Wyrmprints, including at least one four-star. But there’s also a chance for five-star characters, and with the Wyrmite you have at your disposal, you’ll be able to do the Tenfold Summon twice.
  7. Like what you’ve got? Cool. Go link your account now and have a blast. But if you don’t, simply uninstall Dragalia Lost and start back at step 1.

How do you know if what you get from your first two Tenfold Summons is good enough? It really depends on how much you want from your starting characters, though IGN suggests rerolling until you get two or three five-star characters.

You should be all set and be able to start from a much better position than simply leaving things to chance. Don’t forget to check out our general Dragalia Lost guide for even more helpful hints and tips.

A new month means more than just flipping the page on your favorite calendar (and yes, plenty of people still use paper calendars). It means a whole bunch of new stuff in Pokemon GO, including new Field Research quests. The theme for October is water, because that’s the first thing you think of when the month that Halloween is in comes to mind, right?

But we kid Niantic, who undoubtedly has some appropriately spooky treats for Pokemon GO trainers in store for later this month. For the time being, we’re going to zero in on how you can catch Shiny versions of some of your favorite Pokemon thanks to the reshuffled Field Research quest rewards. In particular, Shiny Krabby is the one that seems to be on everyone’s most wanted list, so let’s start by talking about how you can find him first.

How to Catch Shiny Krabby in October

Shiny Krabby - Pokemon GO

There’s good news and bad news when it comes to Shiny Krabby. Since we’re optimists here at Gamezebo, I’ll start with the good: There’s a very particular way to ensure you end up with a Shiny Krabby encounter this month. The bad news is that you don’t have any control over how to trigger it while playing.

Thanks to the work of redditor MilumiGermany, we know exactly which Field Research task is the one we want. As it turns out, in October, the ‘Catch 5 Water-type Pokemon’ task will get you an encounter with Krabby. The only problem is that it’s one of a total of 25 different Field Research quests you might receive when hitting up a PokeStop, and not every one you complete will lead to a Shiny Krabby either, as you can and often will run into the regular version instead.

Still, it’s nice to know exactly how to find Krabby in any case, and then it’s just a matter of hoping the RNG gods are on your side. As well, the research reward Pokemon can’t run away, so once you find Shiny Krabby, you’ll know it’s coming home with you.

What Other Shiny Pokemon Are in October Field Research Quests?

This is the obvious follow-up question, but it’s also a good one. Shiny Krabby isn’t alone this month, as you can find other Shiny Pokemon in Field Research encounters all month long.

Here’s who to look for and how to get a chance at an encounter with them:

  • Shiny Larvitar – Make 3 Excellent Throws in a Row
  • Shiny Squirtle, Bulbasaur or Charmander – Win a Gym battle OR Power Up Pokemon 5 times
  • Shiny Eevee – Evolve a Pokemon
  • Shiny Dratini – Catch a Dragon-type Pokemon
  • Shiny Magikarp – Catch 10 Pokemon
  • Shiny Wailmer – Hatch 2 Eggs

The same caveat applies: You aren’t guaranteed to find the Shiny version of the Pokemon listed here when you complete these quests, but there’s a chance for it every time.

Finally, don’t forget that there’s a new Research Breakthrough reward as well, and for October, it’s the Water-type Legendary Pokemon Suicune. If you’re on the hunt for Shiny Krabby this month anyway, you should definitely find it easy to collect your seven stamps, maybe even more than once.
