Updated on May 30th

Pro Darts 2022+

Another pub sports classic gets the Apple Arcade treatment. This time you’re throwing darts at a variety of different boards. There’s classic darts, but there are also weird challenge modes that are going to have you thinking on your feet. If you like darts, it’s great. If you don’t, well, there are plenty of other games on Apple Arcade.

Warped Kart Racers

There’s nothing better than a good, ol’ fashioned kart racers, and Warped Kart Racers definitely fits into that category. Pick a character from a roster that includes famous faces from the likes of Family Guy, American Dad and more, then race through crazy tracks to try and get to the finish line first. It’s not the most original idea out there, but the multiplayer ensures this one is still an awful lot of fun.

Goat Simulator+

One of the silliest games ever makes its way onto Apple Arcade. You’re controlling a goat with a ridiculously long tongue, and your main goal is destruction. Prance through sandbox levels doing whatever ridiculous things your heart desires. It’s stupid, but it’s also charming and hilarious.

Badland Party

A brand new entry in the Badland series that’s packed with single and multiplayer modes. You can even play on the same device. The game looks gorgeous, it controls really well and it’s hard not to fall in love with it. You should definitely be giving this one a go.

Prune+

One of the best puzzle games ever made finds a new home on Apple Arcade. At its simplest it’s a game about cutting parts of a tree so the rest can grow. But it’s about so much more than that. The zen atmosphere and simple gameplay are a beautiful salve against the rigors of modern life. Pick it up and fall in love.

Moonshot – A Journey Home

A gorgeous cartoon mixture of a platformer and a puzzler with some gravity and physics thrown into the mix. It’s challenging in just the right ways, and there’s more than enough content to keep you playing for a good long while – and playing with a big smile on your face as well.

Construction Simulator 2+

One of those niche games that you’re either going to absolutely adore or utterly ignore. Drive diggers, loaders and more, build roads and structures and generally live the life of a construction worker. If that sounds like your sort of thing, then have at it.

Pro Snooker and Pool 2022+

A big, shiny cue-game simulator that does everything you’d expect from a game with a name like that. It’s really well put together, there’s always a game waiting for you, and if you like pool or snooker you’re going to absolutely fall in love with this one.

Sonic Dash+

A slick auto-runner featuring everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog. Run around, collect rings, unlock new characters and have a decent time doing it. It’s not the deepest game, and it’s been kicking around for a while, but it’s entertaining enough to put a grin on your face.

Gear.Club Stradale

A brand new, AAA racing experience that sees you burning rubber through the picturesque scenery of Italy. There are loads of gorgeous cars to collect, you can join up with friends to cruise and race, and the whole thing looks amazing. It’s also nice to see a totally new game on Apple Arcade.

Pocket Build+

A gorgeous-looking build-’em-up that gives you a blank canvas to place your creations upon. There’s people-management and resource gathering, all to build to your heart’s content. It’s even better with the IAPs removed. Well worth checking out if you want a game that lets you make things.

Alto’s Adventure Remastered

Another Alto game gets some Apple Arcade spit-and-polish. This is a remastered version of the original, and it features a brand new character and 20 new goals that you can only complete once you’ve unlocked them. It’s every bit as smooth and dreamy as when it first came out, and it’s a great way to lose yourself in the mountains for a while.

Monument Valley 2+

A brilliant and often breathtaking adventure puzzler that sees you working your way through impossible worlds. There’s a story here about life, connection and the relationship between parents and their children, and it’s as essential now as it was when it was first released. Play it.

Shadow Blade+

One of the best action platformers on mobile gets the Apple Arcade treatment. It’s all about stealth, short bursts of violence and picking your way through a series of tricky levels. And you get to play as a ninja. What’s better than that?

Gibbon: Beyond the Trees

A gorgeous, ecologically conscious game that sees you controlling a gibbon as it swings through the trees. There’s a real joy to the movement, an important message, and this one has pedigree too – it’s from the dev behind Eloh and Old Man’s Journey. Well worth checking out.

Wylde Flowers

Fancy a magical farming adventure? Well that’s exactly what Wylde Flowers offers. It mixes some adventure and exploration into the cauldron, as well as spells and an excellent story. You’ll be growing crops and looking after animals too. It’s adorable in just the right ways.

Bloons TD 6+

The latest game in the main Bloons series gets the Apple Arcade treatment. If you like tower defense, monkeys or balloons, then you’re going to find a lot to like here. There are loads of modes, from co-op to single player, and a decent depth to proceedings too.

Bridge Constructor+

The original Bridge Constructor game makes the leap over to Apple Arcade. It’s all about putting up a bridge using limited materials and getting vehicles from A to B. You’ll also get the SlopeMania and Trains add-ons. It’s a solid, challenging physics puzzler that’s got a fair share of laughs to it as well.

Hidden Folks+

Another slight revamp of a classic mobile game – this one won Apple’s Game of the Year award back in 2017. It’s basically a digital version of Where’s Waldo, but it’s dripping in charm, great ideas and more than a hefty dollop of good fun.

Nickelodeon Extreme Tennis

A big, giddy blast of arcade-style tennis fun. You’re whacking balls around as one of several characters from classic Nickelodeon toons. This is to tennis what Super Smash Bros. is to punching people in the face. It’s fast, it’s fun and there’s an awful lot to love.

Crashlands+

One of the best survival games on mobile gets a release on Apple Arcade. It’s full of heart, charm, crafting and fighting. The sci-fi setting is brilliant, and there’s a massive world to explore and enjoy. If you’ve not played this before, now’s the perfect time.

Hearts: Card Game+, Spades: Card Game+

2022 hasn’t exactly started out with a bang on Apple Arcade. So much so that we’ve decided to group the two games that HAVE come out together. They’re both digital representations of popular card games, they’re both really well put together, and if you like Hearts or Spades you’ll love them. Hopefully there’ll be something meatier on the way in the coming weeks, though.

The JRPG has found a new home on mobile. Whether it’s ports of classic games or new experiences built from the ground up for mobile, there are loads of JRPGs waiting for you on the App Store and Play Store.

So many, in fact, that someone should probably curate the best ones so you don’t have to wade through them all to find the gems. Oh, wait, that’s what we’ve done with this list. Here are the ten best JRPGs for mobile in 2021.

Chrono Trigger

There are going to be a lot of Square Enix games on this list, so we thought we’d start it off with one. This SNES classic is a time-line jumping JRPG with a cult following big enough to say it probably isn’t a cult anymore. But with good reason.

The story’s brilliant, the world-building is amazing, the characters are stacked full of charm and the gameplay isn’t too shabby either. If you’ve not played this one yet, then it’s high time you corrected that horrendous mistake.

Download from the App Store and Play Store

Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition

This is a really interesting one. Rather than trying to port the massive Final Fantasy XV to mobile, Square Enix squashed it down. The game is all here, it’s just much less of a resource-munching monster.

It’s still probably the best FF game of modern times, and the brilliant story remains completely intact. It’s basically a road trip, but with monsters and conspiracies and loads more going on. Definitely a great way to experience a great game.

Download from the App Store and Play Store

Genshin Impact

Blimey, a non-Squenix game. This one is a modern gacha RPG with some of the very best graphics you’re likely to see on mobile for a while. Seriously, some of Genshin Impact is just absolutely breathtaking.

On top of that it’s a brilliant game with more content than you can shake a magical staff at. Collect characters, fight monsters, explore and just generally have a wonderful time. We mentioned how gorgeous it is too, right? Cool, just checking.

Download from the App Store and Play Store

Dragalia Lost

A massively addictive and oft-overlooked JRPG from Nintendo. It’s a lot simpler than a lot of the games on this list, but it still manages to capture everything that makes JRPGs so much fun.

There’s action, characters, tapping – really, what more could you want? Well how about an awesome story, some spot-on voice acting and the fact that you can turn into a dragon. If you’ve been giving Dragalia Lost a wide berth, stop doing that this very instant.

Download from the App Store and Play Store

Final Fantasy IX

Look, we’re not going to pull our punches here. Final Fantasy IX is the best FF game that came out on the PSOne. FF VII is fine, FFVIII is too emo – FF IX nailed absolutely everything that made the series special in the first place.

And it’s just as good on mobile. Hours and hours of fun await you – there’s a brilliant story, some wonderful characters and a battle system that just won’t quit. You might think we’re wrong, but we think you’re wrong and we’re the ones typing this. So ner.

Download from the App Store and Play Store

Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters

This isn’t one game, it’s six. These are remastered versions of the original Final Fantasy games, polished and preened with extra content and tweaks to make them play even better on mobile devices.

The games are a great way to take a long, hard look back at the origins of one of the greatest JRPG series ever. They’re not cheap, but if you haven’t played them before, they’re well worth checking out.

Chaos Rings 3

Square Enix’s mobile-first series really smashed it out of the park with its third entry. It’s perfect on touchscreen devices, and makes a lot more sense than the first three games. Or, y’know, as much sense as JRPGs can make.

The battle system is super slick, there’s a load of interesting characters and the giant monsters you’re going to fight all look suitably awesome. There’s loads to love in Chaos Rings 3, even if you haven’t played the others in the series.

Download from the App Store and Play Store

Monster Hunter Stories

This one takes the giant terrors from the Monster Hunter series and turns them into super-adorbz pets that you can ride into battle. You build up a team of these ‘monsties’ and battle your way through a pretty intriguing story.

There’s multiplayer here too, so you can take your team into scraps against other players. It’s not exactly cheap, but Monster Hunter Stories is well worth the investment. It doesn’t have the grind of the main-series MH games either.

Download from the App Store and Play Store

Dragon Quest VIII

You can play this one with one hand, which is a pretty impressive accomplishment. Especially when you consider all the buttons usually involved in a JRPG. Dragon Quest VIII has been poked and preened to make it an almost perfect mobile JRPG.

There are slimes to kill, classic characters to find and hours and hours of story to work your way through. The Dragon Quest series is pretty darn brilliant, and this is probably the finest example of it you can get on your phone.

Download from the App Store and Play Store

Disgaea 1 Complete

This one adds a few twists to the JRPG template. For one thing, it’s super tough. For another it’s super gothic. There’s a wonderful silliness to the Disgaea series that sidesteps the poe-faced modernity of certain other franchises.

There’s a lot to learn to get to grips with Disgaea, but it’s well worth the effort. This is a multi-layered, super smart experience that you’re going to lose weeks of your life to once it gets its gloomy claws into your flesh.

Now that we’ve finished our round up of the best games that came out for iOS, Android and Apple Arcade over the last 12 months, we thought it was a good idea to look forward to the game’s we’re all going to be playing in 2022.

It looks like it’s going to be a pretty darn good year for mobile gaming again, with pocket-sized versions of some massive games landing, as well as some sequels and new IPs to get excited about.

If you’ve got a game you’re looking forward to getting your hands on in the new year, be sure to let us know in the comments below. Before that, here are the most exciting upcoming games for mobile in 2022.

Diablo Immortal

This one has been coming for ages. To the point now where we could just be including it as a gag game. But there have been plenty of updates about the mobile version of the dungeon-crawling classic over 2021, and we’re pretty confident it’s actually going to land in 2022. And reasonably confident that it might actually be good.

Just Cause Mobile

Another one that’s been delayed until 2022. It’s a top-down shooter that builds on the explosive mayhem of the main console series. It looks like it should capture the chaos that made the original so great, but in bite-sized mobile nibbles.

Rocksmith+

Less of a game, more of a way to learn how to play an instrument. It’ll be interesting to see how this one works on mobile, but we’ve got pretty high hopes that its gamification of riffing could find a perfect home on your phone.

Out There: Oceans of Time

A new Out There game that builds on the ideas of the original and layers in plenty of new ideas. It looks wildly ambitious, which is something we’re always going to champion. And any game that lets us spend massive amounts of time lost in the cosmos is alright by us.

Vendir: Plague of Lies

A gloomy mix of classic RPG ideas and more modern sensibilities. You’re working your way through a fantasy kingdom that’s riddled with conspiracy and deceit. It looks like it’ll tickle the right parts of a certain type of gamer.

Torchlight: Infinite

Another mobile version of a home smash. This one is another dungeon crawler set 200 years in the future from Torchlight 2. There’s loads of enemies to kill and loot to find, and a few twists to the formula that keep things fresh.

Star Wars Hunters

An arena-based hero shooter set in the Star Wars universe. To be honest, we’re mainly excited about this because one of the characters is two Jawas standing one atop the other. It looks like it’ll be a force-powered take on the likes of Overwatch.

Super Meat Boy Forever

This is another one that’s been in development limbo for a good long while, but the rumblings suggest it’ll be landing on mobile sooner rather than later. It’s another gore-streaked, teeth gnashing platformer that’ll probably make you throw your phone at a wall in frustration.

Frostpunk Mobile

A portable version of the gloomy futuristic city builder. Apparently it’s going to be really cold in the future, and it’s up to you to make sure the residents of your settlement don’t freeze to death. Expect that to be harder than it sounds.

Battlefield Mobile

After the success of Call of Duty: Mobile, it’s not that much of a surprise to see the other massive military shooter making its way to smaller screens. If it gets the controls right, it could be another multiplayer winner.

Apex Legends Mobile

It’s not that much of a surprise to see this character-based battle royale making its way to mobile. If anything, it’s a surprise that it’s taken this long. Hopefully it can capture the spectacular rhythms of violence and running away that make the home version so addictive.

In today’s list of the best games that have come out over the past 12 months, we’re taking a look at the Switch. And boy, has it been a good year if you like your gaming to take place on a hybrid console-handheld.

There are brilliant new entries in long-running series, fantastic new games that make the most of the Switch’s hardware, and even a Tetris game. It wouldn’t be a Nintendo list without a Tetris game.

It was super hard to pare this one down to just ten entries, so if you think there are other Switch games from 2021 that deserve some love, let us know in the comments. Before we get there, though, here are what we think are the ten best Switch games of 2021.

Metroid Dread

A spectacular entry into the 2D Metroid canon, Dread adds in new weapons and kit, super tense stealth sections and some ingenious design twists that’ll keep you on your toes at every turn. Throw in a great story and you’ve got yourself the whole package right here.

Monster Hunter Rise

This one manages to capture everything that makes the Monster Hunter series so addictive, while lowering the bar for entry every so slightly. It still demands a lot of attention, but it’s not quite as overwhelming as some of the other games have been. And Rampage mode is ace.

Tetris Effect: Connected

While it’s weird that this took so long to find a home on Nintendo’s console, we’re super glad that it did. Part homage, part reimagining, all Tetris. It’s a game you’ll be instantly familiar with, but it’ll surprise you at every turn as well.

Shin Megami Tensei V

A game that builds on everything that its predecessors have done, throwing in new demon-raising mechanics, and dropping you into the middle of a war between demons and angels. It’s massive, it’s got a brilliant story and it’ll keep you playing for weeks.

Disco Elysium: The Final Cut

A strange, compelling RPG set in the aftermath of a terrible war that sees you playing an amnesiac detective who’s trying to solve a murder. There’s no traditional combat here, with various skill trees and checks used to push the story along. It’s weird and wonderful and well worth checking out.

Neo: The World Ends With You

The sequel to one of the best JRPGs of this century. It manages to capture what made the original so great, while still moving its ideas forwards. Challenging, thought provoking, and that perfect kind of manic.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

A HD repolishing of an oft overlooked entry in the Zelda series. It’s a massive, engaging, narrative-driven experience with more than a few brilliant ideas thrown in for good measure. And it acts as a bridge between earlier Zelda and Breath of the Wild.

Spelunky 2

One of the best roguelike platformers gets a few new tricks in this excellent sequel. You’re still delving into tricky dungeons to find treasure, take down enemies and grab new gear, but the new twists will keep even seasoned players on their toes. It’s challenging, but worth it.

Overcooked! All You Can Eat

A bundle of the first two Overcooked games and their DLC, as well as some new content exclusively released here. It’s a fast-paced, wonderfully crazed cooking game and once you’ve played it you’ll be hooked.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2

Two of the finest arcade sports game in the world, repurposed for modern devices and released together in one glorious bundle. They’re focused, brilliantly designed, and will have you kick-flipping your way to joy for hours on end.

It’s been another pretty damn good year for mobile gaming, a fact highlighted perhaps by the games that haven’t made it into our breakdown of the ten best iPhone and iPad releases of the last 12 months.

We had some hard choices to make, but we think we’ve made the right ones. We’ve got RPGs, classic ports, puzzlers, car-based sports games and more. We reckon there’s something for everyone here.

You can click on the names of the games below to download them from the App Store. And if you’ve got your own suggestions of games that should have been included, be sure to let us know in the comments section.

Divinity – Original Sin 2

A brilliant port of a brilliant RPG that shows just how impressive mobile gaming can be. It’s deep enough to feel bottomless, there’s an amazing story and it looks utterly stunning. There’s even same device co-op. You’ll need a high end iPad to run it, but it’s definitely worth it.

Marvel Future Revolution

A big, dumb, kicky punchy ARPG that’s packed full of super heroes, super villains and super somewhere-in-betweens. It looks lovely, there’s always something to do and it’s hard not to get tangled up in its gameplay loops.

Rocket League: Sideswipe

Side-on car chaos with a ball. Bounce and flip to score goals, team up with other players and take on gamers from around the world. This one captures everything that made the original so great, then squishes it down into a perfect mobile package.

Alien: Isolation

Sneak through a deserted space station and try to stay enough steps ahead of an extraterrestrial killer that it can’t smash its extra mouth through your head. This is a classic of modern survival horror, and it’s just as good on mobile.

Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins

This one’s a found-phone mystery thriller set in the Whoniverse. And it features the scariest alien killers this side of the last alien killers we wrote about. Solve puzzles, make choices, and try and avoid the Weeping Angels.

Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier

Fight your way through battle royale skirmishes in this sort-of-sequel to FF7. It takes the shape of your usual BR, then throws in summons, skills and chocobos. What’s not to love about all of that?

Townscaper

A soothing experience that’s more like a digital toy than an actual game. There are no goals or levels – just take some time to build the best city you can by dragging your finger around the screen. A great way to spark the imagination.

What Remains of Edith Finch

Find out what happened to your extended family in a series of dark, different vignettes. Experience the day of a family member’s death and try to figure out just what’s been going on. This is a deep, engaging exploration of life and death and everything in-between.

My Time at Portia

In the aftermath of a devastating apocalypse, it’s up to you to try and rebuild the world. Except this isn’t another grey and brown wasteland sim. It’s full of bright colors, bright characters and more than several bucket loads of charm.

Baba Is You

One of the very best puzzle games of recent years. Instead of manipulating the world, you’re manipulating the rules in each level to try and open up a path to the exit. Every challenge makes you think in new and exciting ways.

In the second part of our look back at the best games that have come out over the last 12 months, it’s time to take a deep dive into the Google Play Store. And there have been some real gems landing on Android devices in 2021.

Alongside some ports and repackagings, we’ve got some great original games, too. And if you’re a fan of MOBAs, this has been an excellent year for gaming on the go. There have been some awesome puzzlers too.

You can click on the names of the games below to download them from the Play Store, and if you’ve got your own suggestions of awesome games from 2021, make sure you let us know in the comments.

Rocket League: Sideswipe

A beautiful, chaotic distillation of everything that makes Rocket League so great. It manages to squish down the frantic, weirdly balletic smashy-crashy play into bite-sized, mobile-sized nuggets. This is mobile multiplayer done with skill and aplomb.

League of Legends: Wild Rift

Sure, it came out in certain places at the end of last year, but it didn’t see a worldwide release until 2021, so we’re counting it. This is, hands down, the best MOBA you can play on your phone. Deep, rewarding, always challenging and rarely anything other than a massive amount of fun.

Bomb Club

A super smart, super charming puzzler that sees you blowing things up in all manner of hilarious and head-scratching ways. If you only pick up one new game from this list, then we reckon it should be this one.

Northgard

Battle to survive on a mysterious new continent filled with hazards, enemies and terrible, terrible weather. This is a strategic masterpiece with enough fresh, exciting ideas that it’s hard not to fall in love with it.

Overboard

A murder mystery where the mystery revolves around how you get away with murder. This is a smart choose-your-own-adventure with an exciting cast of characters and all manner of ways to hide your nefarious crime. It might be short, but there’s always a reason to play again.

My Friend Pedro

A super-fast, swipey-blasty action platformer with tricky time limits and a heart of gold. You might finish all the levels quickly, but perfecting them all is going to take you ages. You’d be hard pressed to find more arcade fun elsewhere.

Baba Is You

This one is a deeply smart puzzler that sees you rearranging the rules of each level as you go. Can’t get to the exit? Change what the exit is, then. Every level is packed full of innovation and bright ideas, and there are more eureka moments than you can shake a bath at.

Slay the Spire

One of, if not the best deck-building roguelikes out there. Battle against monsters, collect new cards and powers, die, then do it all again. This is the sort of game that you’re going to lose hours and hours and hours of your life too. And then some more hours.

Tesla Force

A breathless, top-down shooter featuring demonic hordes, ridiculous weaponry and a story about science run amok. There’s some super slick violence here, and the short levels mean you can jump in and out for a slice of chaos on the bus.

Pokemon Unite

Pick a Pokemon and then duke it out in streamlined MOBA battles. It might not quite have the depth of League of Legends, but there’s an accessibility here that makes the game shine all the brighter.

It’s the end of the year, so that means it’s time to take a long hard look back at the games that have come out over the last twelve months and make some tough decisions about which ones were the best. This time round we’re looking at the best games that have come out for Apple Arcade.

We’ve tried to avoid picking + versions of games, and instead focused on new releases. That hasn’t been entirely possible, but we think we’ve done our best all the same. There have been some absolute gems on Apple Arcade this year, but we’re still not entirely sure the service has lived up to its massive potential.

You can click on the names of the games below to download them from the App Store – you’ll need an Apple Arcace account to play them, obviously – and if you’ve got your own favorites be sure to let us know in the comments section below.

Oceanhorn: Chronos Dungeon

A dungeon-crawling hack-and-slash adventure with more than a few interesting twists. Playing on your own it’s pretty good, but when you add some friends into the mix in co-op mode, it takes on a life all of its own.

Cozy Grove

Spry Fox brings its inimical charm to Apple Arcade with this delightful game about discovering ghosts on a strange and ever-changing island. It’s the kind of game you’ll want to play while wrapped in a blanket and sipping a warm beverage of your choice.

Hitchhiker

Travel along the roads of America, discover a strange story and a cast of characters with plenty to share. After a while reality starts to warp around you, and you’ll start questioning everything. This is a smart, engaging mystery that you can’t help but get swept up in.

Fantasian

A wonderful, unique-looking JRPG that’s packed full of content and will keep you playing for hours. There’s a super interesting battle system that lets you streamline your scrapping, there’s a wonderful soundtrack and some super smart ideas that really make this one shine.

Legends of Kingdom Rush

A turn-based RPG set in the Kingdom Rush universe that sees you building up a team of heroes and scrapping it out across a variety of different locations. There’s a depth to the game, but you can still pick up and play in perfect mobile-sized sessions.

Alto’s Odyssey: The Lost City

The definitive edition of Alto’s Odyssey, a slick and super smart experience that sees you sliding down endless mountains. There are new twists and concepts chucked in here, and it’s almost impossible to play without a smile on your face.

Detonation Racing

This one’s a big, dumb racing game in the vein of Split Second. Thrash along race tracks using power-ups and exploding scenery to keep one step ahead of your opponents. It’s slick, full of things blowing up, and deeply cackle-worthy.

Super Leap Day

Nitrome’s new-level-a-day platformer is just as good now as it ever was. Bounce through levels, collecting and dodging and perfecting. It’s tough in all the right ways, and it’s going to keep challenging you for years to come.

Monster Hunter Stories+

A massive AAA experience that sees you adventuring through the worlds of Monster Hunter, collecting famous creatures and using them to fight through RPG battles. It’s far less esoteric than the main MH series, but you can still lose hours and hours of your life to it.

Baldo

A lovely-looking dungeon exploring, puzzle solving, monster fighting experience that takes its cues from the likes of Zelda. There’s an expansive adventure to work your way through, and more than a few twists and turns along the way.
