Punishing: Gray Raven is an action RPG set in a dystopian future where the human race is under threat of extinction. You need to build a team of superhuman constructs to try and stop that from happening. 

But, obviously, some constructs are stronger than others, so you’re going to need to know which are the best if you want to stop the annihilation of the planet and save the day. Which is where our tier list comes in. Read on for that, or check out the official website to learn more about the game.

Before we move onto the tier list proper, here’s a description of how our tiering system works so that you can make sense of it.

What Do Our Tiers Mean?

Here’s a brief explanation of each of our tiers:

• S Tier: Pets in this tier are the absolute best that the game has to offer. You should prioritise unlocking these and increasing their power.
• A Tier: If your collection is lacking in S tiers, A tiers are great for filling gaps. These pets are still great in their own right, but they just lack a little something when you compare them to an S tier. Use them when you need to, but drop them when you can.
• B Tier: During the early phases of the game, you’ll likely rely on a party of a single S tier and a bunch of B tiers. These pets are quite easy to get, and are solid, if unremarkable. Definitely swap them out for A tiers and S tiers, but don’t be ashamed to use them if you need to.
• C Tier: This is when we get into ‘bad pet’ territory. C tiers are, much like D tiers, some of the worst characters in the game, but they often have niche uses. They might be really strong in a particular game mode, or during a certain phase of the game. Take a close look at their skills and judge accordingly.
• D Tier: Pets in this tier are simply never worth using. They’re the worst pets in the game, suffering from severe balance issues, and will underperform at all points in any modes. Don’t use them if you can avoid it.

What’s A Tier List?

We should probably have answered this question at the beginning, eh? A tier list is, quite simply, a list of all of the characters in a specific game ranked from best to worst. In our case, S is the best pets with D being the worst, and A, B, and C filling the gaps.

The purpose of a tier list is to help you determine which pets to use at all stages of the game. We try and make our tier list as useful as possible by explaining our tier system.

For example, there are instances where certain pets are excellent during the beginning of a game, but fade later on. Or, they could be good at a certain game mode. We’ll always try and make this clear.

How Did We Select Our Punishing Gray Raven Tier List?

We used a number of different sources when selecting our Punishing Gray Raven tier list, but, primarily, we judge based on our personal experience with the game. As a result, it is bound to be quite a subjective list, but there’s no getting around that.

To determine the rankings, we both experiment with the characters in the game (if unlocked), as well as theory-craft based on skill descriptions and raw statistics. That’s why you’ll see our tier list change so much when a game first launches, as we’re in the testing phase.

It’s also worth noting that we do scour communities, like Reddit, for community feedback. If the general consensus is that a specific pet is strong or weak, we will reflect that in our tier list. That way, it’s got a certain degree of objectivity.

What should I upgrade?

To begin with you should focus on increasing your fire rate and rewards. Your giants are plenty strong already and upgrading them can be expensive. When you’re getting higher rewards, it’ll cost less of your stack, so it makes more sense to increase your fire power and earnings first.

Move with the gates

On levels where there’s a gate moving in front of your cannon, you should usually try to move your cannon at the same speed to get the most out of the multiplication. This isn’t always the case, especially if there’s a gate with a much higher multiplication number that you can hit easily. For the most part, though, move and you’ll do just fine.

Do the maths

You’re going to have to do some simple maths from time to time to figure out what’s the best shot to be taking. An x2 followed by an x3 will get you more units than an x4 on its own, for example. Think about how you’re going to make your army as large as it can be as quickly as possible.

Don’t focus on one lane

Your enemies are going to attack you from multiple directions, so don’t just blast all of your forces down one lane and hope for the best. Shoot a few units, move, then shoot a few more. Rinse and repeat. You can also use the scenery to split your forces – aim for corners where some of your units will head one way and some the other.

Be smart with your giants

It’s tempting to fire out your giants as soon as you can, but look at the situation you’re in before you do. If you only need to hit the enemy base a couple more times to win, then there’s no point sending out your giants – save them for the start of the next level when they’re going to be much more useful. And always try and fire them so they’re going to multiply the most as they stomp forwards.

The more powerful your attacks, the less you’re going to have to rely on your defense. Still, it’s a good idea to toughen up in case things go south.

Increase your coins?

The first thing you should do on every level is concentrate on upgrading your fuel tank. The more fuel you have, the longer you can smash for. Give an upgrade or two to length, power and size, but spend the rest of the cash you have on increasing your fuel until you hit the max upgrade.

Next go length

Next you’re going to have to work on the length. You’re going to need to max out the length upgrade to finish the level and move on to the next challenge. The length upgrades are the most expensive, so it might take a while, but you’re better off working towards them now and occasionally adding to the other upgrades along the way.

Grind your power

Towards the end of the level, you’ll want to spend on your power and size upgrades – once you’ve maxed out your length. It can be a bit grindy, but you’re going to need that power to smash all the blocks before your fuel runs out. Remember your cash moves over to the next level as well, so think about taking a couple of runs where you nearly smash everything to fill up your coffers.

Scoop and score

Towards the end of your run, when you’re about to run out of fuel, take a moment to scoop all of the bricks along the bottom of the screen towards your bucket. If they’re still out when your fuel runs out, you’re not going to earn any cash from them, so it’s well worth taking some time to clean up what you’ve collected to get as much money as you can.

Check the upgrades

In the later levels you’ll get extra upgrades that can come in really handy. They’re expensive, but you can use the money you take over to the next level to buy some. They’ll give you extra cash, more fuel and other boosts. Spend your cash wisely to make sure you’re becoming as powerful as you can.

The game sees you in charge of a team of four different warriors, perched on a balcony above a pile of colored blocks. Those colors match the colors of your fighters. Tap the portrait of one of your characters, and you can clear one of the blocks of the same hue from the pile.

Sure, that sounds counter-intuitive, since it’s going to destabilize the structure, but the blocks are being used to build a bridge to help some kids get to safety. So it sort of makes sense. The more blocks you clear, the more children escape, the more stars you earn at the end of the level. But there’s always the chance – especially with the way you’re only given a choice of three blocks to clear – that the tower is going to collapse.

Your soldiers also have special moves that can protect them from the attacks from the void creatures – take too much damage and they’ll die – as well as making them more powerful in other ways. You’ll collect new characters as you play, and upgrade them with extra cards. It’s a pretty familiar system, but the balance does feel a little off – it takes a while to get new characters, and they’re pretty expensive.

Then there’s the energy system. It costs 5 energy to play a level, and when you run out there’s no way to recharge other than waiting. That pretty much stops you in your tracks, and while there is another mode you can play, it’s essentially random and isn’t going to fill the time.

Rocky Towers has some solid ideas, and when you’re actually playing it, it’s a lot of fun. But there’s a lack of polish and balance elsewhere that keeps you from really getting into it. That’s a shame, because with a few tweaks it could be an interesting diversion. As it stands, it’s one to miss.

The more you can do, the more money you’re going to earn. Keeping your loungers stocked in towels is the difference between chasing cash and swimming in it.

Watch out for shoals

Shoals are a great way to make a lot of money in a short amount of time. When you spot one, swipe as many of the fish as you can. You’ll up your multiplier and be raking in the cash. If the shoal goes under your boat, remember to start swiping on the other side to collect even more once they’ve passed.

Swipe like mad on the big fish

There’s a big fish on every section, and while it’s going to take you a while to be strong enough to collect them, it’s still worth your time. Swipe as fast as you can on the big fish when it appears – the screen will darken to let you know its on its way. You might not catch it, but it’s good to get the practice in for when you’re strong enough.

Complete the challenges

Challenges will appear in the top right of the screen in small green boxes. Tap on one to see what you need to do to complete it. Some of them you’ll finish just by playing, but there are others that are going to take a little more dedication to get done. Make sure you always know what the current challenge is, and make sure you’re working towards completing it.

Open the boxes

You’ll sometimes swipe on a variety of different boxes floating in the ocean. These will appear in the bar at the top right of the screen. Tap them to find out how you can open them. Some will open automatically, others will need gems or time or videos to get what’s inside. We wouldn’t recommend spending your gems on boxes, but the rest are fair game.

Hire when you can

You should save your gems for hiring and upgrading new crew mates. These will up your fishing skills and allow you to earn more and catch more fish. The more crew you have, the better you’re going to do, and they stick around when you cash in your fishing XP as well, which is super useful.
